MORMONISM

The December 1996 direct mail appeal letter from Sunstone says their office is moving and the organization is going to be running in the black for the first time in its history. A merchandise offer lists the entire back issue collection (94 editions) on disk in the form of a Folio Infobase for $33.

"Mormon-index" is a new weekly online newsletter "containing queries about Mormon Internet Resources, responses to those queries, and announcements of Mormon Internet Resources," which is apparently the name of the enterprise behind the Mormon-index e-mail distribution list. You can view its archive at <http://www.panix.com/~klarsen/mormon-index/>. To subscribe, send the message <subscribe mormon-index> to <majordomo@lists.panix.com>. For example, in the February 10 edition (v1 n9) I read of a Web page named "LDS Apologetics" at <http://gene.protree.com/shields> which is subtitled "Scholarly & Historical Information Exchange for Latter-day Saints." The description says it is "a site for responses to issues raised by critics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS, Mormons)." Contact listowner Kent Larsen <klarsen@panix.com> for more info.

"Church Enters World Wide Web 'Carefully and Methodically'" by Sara Jane Weaver -- reviews the development of the official LDS Web site <http://www.lds.org> since it opened in mid-December and includes a chart of activity (hits) since that time. Also has an interesting list of the "top 30 countries in which the greatest number of visits to the site originated." Church News, Mar 1 '97, p6.

"How much of the human family has had its temple work done?" by Kahlile B. Mehr -- baptism for the dead, giving the deceased access to LDS heaven, has been performed by Mormons for 140 million deceased individuals. The bad news is, there are an estimated 150 billion to go. The Ensign, Mar '97, p73.
(from Apologia Report 2:7, March 24, 1997)

"CD-ROM Maker Buys LDS Book Publisher" -- notes that the Orem, Utah Infobase company has purchased Bookcraft Inc. Apologia has also learned that Bookcraft now offers a Spanish version of Bruce McConkie's Mormon Doctrine, one of the best single-volume examples of the conflict between LDS and historic Christian theology. Salt Lake Tribune, Jul 2 '97, pB8.
(from Apologia Report 2:21, July 14, 1997)

"The Word: 20,000 Baptists Will Spread It When They Hit Utah" by Peter Scarlet -- the SBC convention is coming to Salt Lake City in 1998. Mentions the new 76-minute video, "The Mormon Puzzle," that the Southern Baptists have produced for their flock in preparation. In a recent conversation with Paul Carden, LDS specialist Dick Baer said he has viewed the film and found it impressive. Scarlet briefly contrasts The Mormon Puzzle with The Godmakers and observes Puzzle is "quite different" -- due, in part, to a lack of sensationalism. Salt Lake Tribune, Jul 5 '97, pB1.
(from Apologia Report 2:21, July 14, 1997)

"Mormon Index" -- just a couple of items from this statistics column. Did you know that the "number of acts of adultery Brigham Young said it takes to be guilty" was 10? Or, did you know the "number of currently existing 'churches' that are in some way part of Joseph Smith's 'Latter Day Saint Movement'" is 62? Sunstone, Jul '97, p15.
(from Apologia Report 2:22, July 21, 1997)

"Why the Divide?" by L.L. (Don) Veinot -- the first review (con, not pro) of How Wide the Divide?, by Craig L. Blomberg and Stephen E. Robinson (IVP, 1997) that we've seen from a countercult ministry. Concludes that "InterVarsity Press has produced one of the best evangelistic tools the Mormon church has had...." Midwest Christian Outreach, Inc. Journal, Jul/Aug '97, p6.
