BUDDHISM

"The Appeal of Buddhist Spirituality" by Thomas In-Sing Leung -- from the contents page, "an introduction to Buddhist thought and a well-reasoned Christian response to it." Radix, v24 n1 (1996), p12.
(from Apologia Report 1:11, March 25, 1996)

The Experience of Buddhism: Sources and Interpretations, by John S. Strong (Wadsworth, 1995) -- the reviewer finds this "supplants Stephen Beyer's 1974 anthology The Buddhist Experience. ...In an advanced course on the Buddhist tradition, a number of students described this reader as their favorite text -- a remarkable tribute for a source book!" From a brief review in Religious Studies Review, Jan '96, p88b.9
(from Apologia Report 1:12, April 1, 1996)

"A Dialogue of Reconciliation" by Brenda Carr -- a wholly uncritical, pro-interfaith dialog review of Living Buddha, Living Christ, by Thich Nhat Hanh (Riverhead Books, 1995). Sojourners, May/Jun '96, p60. Also reviewed (pro, not con) in New Perspectives, Mar/Apr '96, p22.
(from Apologia Report 1:13, April 8, 1996)

"The Dalai Lama and the World Religions: A False Friend?" by Jane Composon -- reports the Dalai Lama "believes that ultimate liberation is obtained only through the practice of Buddhist teachings" contrary to the views of his pluralistic fans. *The claim of pure tolerance is a suspicious thing.* Religous Studies, Jun '96, p271.
(from Apologia Report 1:21, July 23, 1996)

"Sun Without a Moon" by Alex Shoumatoff -- Who's the real 10th Panchen Lama? Extensive, with detailed explanation of how reincarnation plays an important role in Tibetan Buddhist succession (including some eerie proofs). Vanity Fair, Aug '96, p98.
(from Apologia Report 1:22, July 30, 1996)

"Divergence, Convergence: Buddhist-Christian Encounters" by Leo D. Lefebure -- a joint review (more con than pro) of Mystical Theology: The Science of Love, by William Johnston (HarperSanFrancisco, 1996) and Living Buddha, Living Christ, by Thich Nhat Hanh (Riverhead Books, 1995). Both works claim that religions share a common mystical core. Lefebure, who rejects this claim, has a fundamentally different perspective, and gives significant background on the authors that I haven't found elsewhere. Christian Century, Oct 16 '96, p964.
(from Apologia Report 2:1, January 13, 1997)

"Buddhist Pathways for Spiritual Christians" by Katherine A. Gilbert -- "Despite the significant differences between these two faiths, some Christians are finding spiritual resources in Buddhism. They are not necessarily leaving Christianity or blending the two, but drawing on Buddhist teachings to reinforce their Christian faith." The Christian Ministry, Nov/Dec '96, p20.
(from Apologia Report 2:1, January 13, 1997)

The Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama (Wisdom, 1996) -- explains the significance of the Dalai Lama having "admitted he was not familiar with the Holy Scriptures" at the time of this book was created. Reviewed (con, not pro) by J. Isamu Yamamoto. Christian Research Journal, Spr '97, p49.
(from Apologia Report 2:20, July 1, 1997)

"American Buddhism Facing Uncertain Future?" by Richard Cimino -- surveys a lengthy essay in the Spring '97 issue of the Wilson Quarterly which reports that "not only is American Buddhism divided between different expressions, but ... these movements have weaknesses particular to their traditions." Religion Watch, Jun '97, p1.
(from Apologia Report 2:20, July 1, 1997)

"The Pentagon Meditation Club" by Tracy Cochran -- includes a description of "fundamentalist Christian" persecution of the 20-year-old group in the nation's capital. Tricycle, Sum '97, p30.
(from Apologia Report 2:22, July 21, 1997)
